Time to Wake Up: Days of Abundant Resources and Falling Prices Are Over Forever

The purpose of this, my second (and much longer) piece on resource limitations, is to persuade investors with an interest in the long term to change their whole frame of reference: to recognize that we now live in a different, more constrained, world in which prices of raw materials will rise and shortages will be common. (Previously, I had promised to update you when we had new data. Well, after a lot of grinding, this is our first comprehensive look at some of this data.)

Accelerated demand from developing countries, especially China, has caused an unprecedented shift in the price structure of resources: after 100 hundred years or more of price declines, they are now rising, and in the last 8 years have undone, remarkably, the effects of the last 100-year decline! Statistically, also, the level of price rises makes it extremely unlikely that the old trend is still in place. If I am right, we are now entering a period in which, like it or not, we must finally follow President Carter’s advice to develop a thoughtful energy policy and give up our carefree and careless ways with resources. The quicker we do this, the lower the cost will be. Any improvement at all in lifestyle for our grandchildren will take much more thoughtful behavior from political leaders and more restraint from everyone. Rapid growth is not ours by divine right; it is not even mathematically possible over a sustained period. Our goal should be to get everyone out of abject poverty, even if it necessitates some income redistribution. Because we have way overstepped sustainable levels, the greatest challenge will be in redesigning lifestyles to emphasize quality of life while quantitatively reducing our demand levels. A lower population would help. Just to start you off, I offer Exhibit 1: the world’s population growth. X marks the spot where Malthus wrote his defining work. Y marks my entry into the world. What a surge in population has occurred since then! Such compound growth cannot continue with finite resources. Along the way, you are certain to have a paradigm shift. And, increasingly, it looks like this is it!

The headline above is from today's issue of National Geographic Daily News. A tornado, estimated to be a mile wide and an F5 on the Fujita scale devastated Tusaloosa. The storm system that spawned this tornado has killed 260 people over two days. Meteorologists are trying to determine how long this tornado stayed on the ground, but it could have been hundreds of miles.

I could not explain the science nearly as eloquently as is done in a NASA Earth Observatory discussion of the weather systems that produced the deadly tornados in southeastern U.S. over the past two days, and so here's a link to their site. Here's a video animation of the storm that is absolutely awesome.

Early warning signal for ecosystem catastrophe detected Physorg

The finding, reported today (April 29) in the journal Science by a team of researchers led by Stephen Carpenter, a limnologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is the first experimental evidence that radical change in an ecosystem can be detected in advance, possibly in time to prevent ecological catastrophe.

"For a long time, ecologists thought these changes couldn't be predicted," says Carpenter, a UW-Madison professor of zoology and one of the world's foremost ecologists. "But we've now shown that they can be foreseen. The early warning is clear. It is a strong signal."

The implications of the National Science Foundation-supported study are big, says Carpenter. They suggest that, with the right kind of monitoring, it may be possible to track the vital signs of any ecosystem and intervene in time to prevent what is often irreversible damage to the environment.

"With more work, this could revolutionize ecosystem management," Carpenter avers. "The concept has now been validated in a field experiment and the fact that it worked in this lake opens the door to testing it in rangelands, forests and ."

EcoInteractive Forecast Completely New Climates ~ http://bit.ly/iiF3Sw ~ Video

http://www.sciencedaily.com/

The eastern United States has a mild, humid, temperate climate, while the western United States has a dry climate, right?

Well, according to climate models, global warming could change our current world climate zones, which would affect where crops are grown and even drive some plant and animal species to extinction, all in the next 100 years.

Al Gore brought the issue to the big screen. Global warming -- what impact could it really have on our world? Geographer Jack Williams says, based on his new analyses of climate forecasting models, we're headed for major change -- fast.

"One of the things that we can definitely say that the more carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere, the models very clearly show more of a warming that takes place in the U.S. and worldwide," said Williams, of the University of Wisconsin.

How much warming? With levels of CO2 continuing to rise, Williams suggests areas of the world that currently have a tropical climate will be much warmer and drive vegetation and animal life north. Williams believes these changes would lead to the spreading of Malaria northward, more catastrophic natural disasters and overall greater human health risks.

Mr. Tucker,

Your story about transitioning from climate skepticism to climate realism has gotten quite a bit of attention and interest among folks on "my side" of that debate, as you can imagine. I had wondered if it were still possible for people to be "defeated by facts" and change their minds about issues tangled in America's contentious partisan warfare. I don't know your whole story, but if that's what you've done, you're to be commended. Intellectual self-discipline and courage are rare in U.S. politics these days.

I write not only to thank you, but to encourage you to keep going. Keep pursuing this line of inquiry. Keep thinking about changes in the climate and what they mean for America and the world. Recognizing the problem is the first step in a long journey, and no one, not even the most devoted climate advocate, is certain where that journey ultimately leads.

As you dig, you'll discover that there's some disagreement over just how much climate change is "too much" -- how much humans ought to tolerate/adapt to vs. how much they should try to prevent. That issue has not been and can not be settled with any certainty. Ultimately it's a question of values, and different people will value risk, economic growth, and social justice differently.

Nonetheless, climate scientists have done their best to identify the level of CO2 in the atmosphere that would risk pushing the climatic system over dangerous, irreversible thresholds. Over time, their consensus has changed, but it's always been to revise the level downward. First it was 550 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere. Then it was 450, which remains the general U.N. target and what's reflected in the 2007 IPCC report. Now many people are arguing that the report is conservative and out-of-date and the latest science suggests 350 ppm. (Currently, we're at 392 ppm.)

Rapid increases in greenhouse gases have happened more frequently in the Earth’s history than previously realized, according to a Scripps Institution of Oceanography-led study published in the journal Nature.

Scientists have studied extensively the the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), about 56 million years ago, a period of rapid global warming that’s associated with a temperature spike on par with expectations for today’s global warming scenarios.

But according to the Scripps Institute, there’s been a series of six smaller greenhouse gas fluxes during the same geologic time period (the Palaeocene and Eocene epochs, 65 to 34 million years ago). These so-called “modest hyperthermals” (meaning a rapid, pronounced period of ) had shorter durations and recoveries (about a 40,000 year cycle) and involved an exchange of carbon between surface reservoirs into the atmosphere and then into sediment.

The researchers believe that large-scale carbon releases were vented from the ocean floor, but were reburied relatively quickly.

TheEarthScience Earthquakes: A threat not to be taken lightly, but odds of one occurring are ... http://sns.mx/yNc1y3

http://www.stlbeacon.org/index.php

One possible guide to that future is found in a frightening past. New Madrid spawned the largest quakes ever recorded east of the Rocky Mountains. The four shocks, striking between December 1811 and February 1812, have become the stuff of local legend. People were rumored to have been awakened as far away as New York City, church bells rang in Boston and the president felt the quakes in the nation's capital. Regional lore even has it that the Mississippi River briefly flowed backward. The official webpage of New Madrid says the quakes are estimated to have clocked in at between 7.8 and 8.8 on the Richter Scale.

But the actual intensity is still a matter of some debate, especially since tools weren't around at the time to create proper measurements. Generally, they are thought to have been smaller than folklore suggests. The U.S. Geological Survey approximates the New Madrid quakes in the 7.0-7.7 range. In recent findings released to the Seismological Society of America, one expert estimated the most powerful of the quakes right around the 7.0 mark.

A prominent Stanford University oceanographer believes the oceans are a clear indicator of the state of the climate. The story they are telling is an ominous one.

For more than three decades, the oceanographer, Robert Dunbar, has been a leader among scientists trying to understand the dynamics of complex systems that govern climate around the world.

He is an award winning teacher as well as researcher. His work has carried him and his students to places like Kenya, New Zealand, Galapagos and, perhaps most importantly, Antarctica, where he has made some 30 trips and spent six and a half years of his life.

He has worked often with Lawrence Livermore Lab climate experts as well as with colleagues from around the world.

"Among climate scientists, warming is undeniable," he said last week in Pleasanton, where he spoke to the Valley Study Group. Global temperatures have been rising for the past 100 years or so, with the steepest rise measured since about 1970. Yet he considers the term "global warming" something of a diversion.

In the first place, there's a lot more than warming going on. Ocean levels are rising faster than predicted, threatening in the foreseeable future to displace coastal populations and ruin low lying agriculture with increased salinity.

They should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M2.5+ in the US and adjacent areas and especially should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M4.5+ in the world. Beginning January 1, 2009, earthquakes outside the US below M4.5 are not reported unless NEIC obtains felt reports. The World Data Center for Seismology, Denver (a part of the USGS National Earthquake Information Center) continues to receive data from observatories throughout the world for several months after the events occurred, and using those data, adds new events and revises existing events in later publications. For a description of these later publications and the data available, see Scientific Data.
